Ranacker Conservation Area Turns 50 years old and continues to be a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts in northeast Missouri

By Ethan Colbert

According to the men and women who knew him best, Roy Ranacker had three great loves of his life — his wife, Christeen; classic Ford automobiles, and Missouri’s wildlife.
It was his love of Missouri’s wildlife that drove the Hannibal businessman to purchase — with his business partner Don Barker — a large swath of rural Pike County property in February 1937. This large property south of Frankford on Hwy. RA is what area residents know today as Ranacker Conservation Area, which celebrated last month its 50th anniversary as a public use area of the Missouri Department of Conservation.
