Betty Moore

Betty Moore, 83, of Bowling Green, formerly of Vandalia and Curryville, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 at the Hannibal Regional Hospital.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m., at the Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green, with Rev. Sammy Lorton officiating.   Burial will be in the Samuel Taylor Cemetery near Rockport, Ill.  Visitation was held on Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty was born on Nov. 3, 1929 in Summer Hill, Ill., the daughter of George and Dorothy Chaplain Tobias.  Betty was raised in Summer Hill and moved with her family to St. Louis. Upon marriage to David P. Griffith in January of 1946, they moved to Richmond, Va.  They moved back to Summer Hill in 1962 and then David preceded her in death in November of 1969.  On July 20, 1974 she married Calvin “Erwin” Moore, at which time she moved near Vandalia.  Erwin preceded her in death on June 14, 2013.  Other survivors include her daughter Patricia Gail Heyer of Eolia,  son David W. Griffith and wife Jane of Townsend, Mass.,  stepson John E. Moore and wife Vicky of Auxvasse, stepdaughters Susie M. DeVault and husband Rick of Temple, Texas, and Penny D. Smith and husband Danny of Mexico;  13 grandchildren Tracie Burlamachi of Gunstable, Mass., Allen Heyer of Troy, Alicia Heyer and Janaleigh Heyer of Eolia, Hanna DeVault and Elizabeth DeVault of Temple, Texas, Adam Moore of Kansas City, Nicholas Moore of Springfield, D.J. Smith of Columbia, David Smith of Kansas City,  Michaela Sharlott of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Matthew Smith of Columbia, and Sarah Smith of Mexico;  eight great-grandchildren; brother Jerry Tobias and wife Liz of  Hannibal, and Paul Tobias and wife Carol of Elsberry, sisters Helen Spangler and husband Joe of  Clarksville  and Nancy Douglas of  Rock Springs, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Roger Heyer, sisters Patricia Tobias, Delphine Reeder, Georgia Williams, Leta Ralph, and Linda Polite, and brothers Russell Tobias and Ellis Tobias.

Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.   She and her first husband had a floral nursery in Richmond, Va.  When she returned to Illinois she worked at Starks Nursery, Bobbie Brooks Garment Factory, and as a nurses aide at Pike County Memorial Hospital from 1961 to 1974.  Upon her marriage to Erwin she took up farming with her husband.  She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, and crafts.  She especially loved to cook and would always set another plate on the table and could be offended if you didn’t eat.  Betty attended the New Harmony Christian Church.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandchildren and other family and friends.
