Hannibal defeats Lady Cats

The BGHS Lady Cats volleyball team headed north on Highway 61 last week for a bout against Hannibal. The Pirate girls defeated both the JV and varsity squads.

“The varsity came out pretty strong in the first game with serving and a kill early on,” said head volleyball coach Erin VanDyke. “They worked together as a team more than they have so far this season.”

In the first set, the varsity girls fell 18-25.

“The girls came out slow in the second game and after a number of serve receive errors, they were unable to get back the spark from the first game,” VanDyke explained.

The Lady Cats lost 8-25 in the second set.

Kaycee Sutton lead the BGHS girls in kills with three, followed by Kirsten White with two, and Evan Scherder and Brooke Bruns with one each.  Sarah Stumbaugh and Scherder each had two aces for the night.

The JV ladies lost in two games 13-25 and 19-25.

“With no subs on the bench again this season, the girls played a very scrappy game and did a good job setting the ball up,” VanDyke said appreciatively.

Tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 26, the Lady Cats will welcome visiting team Mexico HS for a home game, starting at 5:30 p.m.
