Free FluMist available for children
The Missouri State Health Department has purchased FluMist vaccine with state funds and offering it to all children 2 through 18 years of age, regardless of insurance status.
The flu vaccine, given by shot or nasal-mist, is recommended for everyone six months of age and up to get annually.
FluMist is only recommended for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 to 49 with no chronic disease or illness because it is a weakened live-virus.
The Pike County Health Department does have available all the different presentations of flu vaccine so that everyone has the opportunity to protect themselves as some of the vaccine presentations have restrictions. The Pike County Health Department nurse screens each person to make sure they are getting the vaccine they need.
Flu season usually begins in October and runs through April, but can extend into May.
It takes two weeks from when the vaccine is given for a person to develop enough antibodies to give them the best protection. This is a great opportunity for children to get the vaccine if they have not been vaccinated this year.
With family gatherings upon us as well as school age children daily being exposed we are hoping to increase the vaccination rates in our county with this opportunity.
When people get the vaccine they are not only protecting themselves, but protecting their friends and loved ones.
Local officials will be offering the free FluMist starting Monday, Dec. 16, at the Pike County Health Department, located at 1 Health Care Place in Bowling Green.
Normal business walk-in days with a nurse available are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1-4p.m. If those days or times do not work, don’t hesitate to call and schedule an appointment.
