March 3 through 7 is National School Breakfast Week. Bowling Green R-1 School District will be hosting several special events to celebrate.
The majority of Americans feel breakfast is important, and research shows students who eat breakfast score better on standardized test, yet hectic mornings make it difficult to fit the meal in every day.
In fact, 40 percent of moms say that their child does not eat breakfast daily, according to Kellogg’s recent Breakfast in America survey.
The 2014 National School Breakfast Week theme, “Take Time for School Breakfast,” encourages parents to consider the school breakfast program as a time-saving option for busy mornings.
School breakfast choices include protein, grains, fruit or 100 percent fruit juice and low-fat milk and new nutrition standards for school meals mean more whole grains and more fruit at breakfast, while fat, sodium and calories are limited.
National School Breakfast Week Events at Bowling Green R-1
Tuesday, March 4, a representative from the St. Louis Dairy Council will be at both elementary schools to talk about the benefits of dairy and answer questions.
Also on Tuesday, a health and fitness expert will be visiting our school to share some tips and advice.
Friday, March 7, Rose Acre Farms, the “good egg” people will be providing eggs for the entire school and be available for presentations and a question and answer session.
March 10, a representative of the Missouri Pork Producers Association will be providing an educational opportunity at the Middle School.
The Bowling Green R-1 School District Wellness Committee will be hosting an open meeting on March 13, 3:30 p.m. at Central Office.
The school wellness council is an advisory group concerned with health and wellbeing of students and staff. This group includes school staff, students and community members. We invite and welcome any participation.
School wellness councils typically access the school health environment, programs and policies and identify ways to strengthen these and provide feedback to improve the health of students and staff.
