The theme of this year’s Middletown Picnic which is Saturday, Aug. 11 is “Hillbilly Homecoming.”
The popular event attracts visitors from miles around every year to the tiny town on Hwy. 161 in northern Montgomery County.
This year’s picnic will include a flower and vegetable show where green-thumbs can show off their home-grown wares, an apple pie contest, and the annual parade. Parade participants are encouraged to consider the “hillbilly” theme as they prepare their floats, tractors, classic cars, horses, and bikes.
Another tradition is the ever-popular food stand, where picnic-goers can enjoy fish sandwiches, pork steaks, hot dogs, and hamburgers.
The washer tournament will begin at 1 p.m. New this year, and promising to be a good time, will be “outhouse races” at 2 p.m.
The baby show will begin at 3 p.m., and several others events will take place during the day-long festival, including a cake walk, bale throwing contest, and music, to name a few.
Festivities start in the morning and run until the last picnickers go home and are all centered around the Community Center grounds. The picnic goes towards the upkeep of the Middletown Com-munity Center building.
