Jim Hansen’s Captiol report

Friends of the 40th District,

I would like to start by thanking each and every one of you for putting great trust in me to be your State Representative.  I promise to be a strong voice of advocacy for our district and to always keep the interest and will of the people in mind. With that in mind, welcome to the first edition of my Capitol Report; a weekly address I will use to keep you updated on what is going on with the Missouri General Assembly.

Gun Control

It has been a busy week at the Missouri Capitol as session began and our work “officially” started. Already I have begun to work on issues constituents have written, called and emailed about. Several of these revolved around “Gun Control” and “Second Amendment Rights”.  Let me assure you that I am doing everything in my power, including co-sponsoring legislation, to ensure that good law-abiding citizens are not having their 2nd Amendment rights trampled on by the Federal Government. I took an oath to uphold and defend the constitution, and I plan to do just that.

Obviously there are some issues we need to be looking into.  I am open to exploring different options to ensure we are doing everything in our constitutionally-authorized power to stop gun-related tragedies from occurring.  This includes looking into how we handle and fund mental health institutions and care.  Also, exploring professional protection for our public schools is something worth looking into.  There are many options to examine as we move forward, but gun control over law-abiding citizens must not be the route we take.  Criminals will continue to find and use guns for criminal activity.  Gun control only keeps guns away from those law abiding citizens wishing to use guns for protection, hunting, and other recreational purposes.

Committee Assignments

I was very honored to be chosen by Speaker Tim Jones to serve on three different house committees.  I will be serving on the Economic Development, Veterans Issues, and Insurance Policy committees.  Economic Development was a platform of my campaign and I look forward to exploring different ways to help job growth in our state.  We must do more to be a “small business friendly” state that can provide jobs, through the private sector, for our citizens.  The Speaker chose me to serve on the Veterans committee because of my status as an Army Veteran and passion for Veterans issues.  We must do what we can to ensure our Veterans are being taken care of properly when they return home.  After spending much of my business career in the Insurance industry the Speaker felt I would do well exploring Insurance issues and how we handle those issues form the State perspective.

Relationship Building

Already I have had the opportunity to begin work building relationships with local and county officials, as well as state departments and advocacy groups working towards the betterment of our area. I’ve met with leaders in the Farming and Agriculture Industry, prominent individuals working for Education Reform in our state, and spoke with visiting constituents to help gain a better understanding of the issues impacting our area.

As always, I look forward to working with and for you as we enter into this legislative session.  Please feel free to contact my office with any questions, comments, or concerns you might have.
