NECAC participates in job fair

Three North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) staff members with years of experience in human resources and job training will participate in a job fair sponsored by the Louisiana Economic Development Committee.

The event is from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 1 at Your Event Center, 120 S. Fifth, in Louisiana. Area businesses will distribute employment information and accept resumes.

The three NECAC staff member participating are Chief Deputy Director for Administration and Personnel Dan Page of Frankford, Employee Benefits Specialist Tammie Miller of Silex and Pike County Service Coordinator Neil Darnell of Louisiana.

Page said that with few exceptions, the first introduction of an applicant to a company is the resume. That’s why it has to be right.

“The initial reviewer will spend less than 10 seconds on the resume and will, in those 10 seconds, decide whether to put it aside as a possibility or put it with ‘the others,’” added Paige. “Because any single job may have 80 to 200 people apply for it, the resume must sell the individual and sell them in those 10 seconds.”

Miller says acing the interview is just as important as having a great resume.

“You want to make sure that you present yourself professionally in the best possible light and be as confident as possible,” Miller said. “Don’t exaggerate, but show the interviewer that you know something about the company, you understand what the job entails and highlight your experience as it directly pertains to the job.”

Darnell will discuss NECAC life-skills classes and training programs that can help those who’ve lost jobs prepare to get back into the workforce.

“During a time of career transition, people face a lot of uncertainty – not just in the job market, but in daily living,” Darnell mentioned. “Bills may begin piling up, mortgage or rent payments are becoming harder to make and the cupboards are looking bare. We can help minimize these additional stressors so that people can focus on finding a job.”

More information about NECAC programs and services is available by calling Darnell at (573) 324-2207. You may also visit the NECAC Pike County Service Center, located at 805 Business Highway 61 North in Bowling Green. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.
