Discounted home repairs offered by NECAC
The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) continues to take applications for a program that for just $30 allows homeowners in Pike and Lincoln counties can get up to $5,000 of house improvements.
The program is offered by NECAC in partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and The People’s Bank and Trust Company of Troy. NECAC was awarded a $500,000 grant for the program.
The Federal Home Loan Banks are a group of cooperatives that lending institutions use to finance housing and economic development in local communities.
“This is a great program that will have a tremendous impact,” said NECAC Deputy Director for Housing Developments Carla Potts. “Nothing makes communities stronger than to see people invest in the value of their homes.”
The grant was one of 11 totaling $5 million that the Federal Home Loan Bank awarded to agencies in Missouri for housing rehabilitation.
Participants must own their homes and meet income guidelines. They also have to pay a $30 filing fee. A wide variety of work can be done, including roof replacements, electrical and plumbing updates, window and door renovations and disabled access work.
“The idea is to make the homes safer and better to live in,” Potts said. “This program is one more way to improve the housing stock in our communities.”
The $500,000 grant isn’t the first NECAC has received through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.
In 2006, the agency partnered with United State Bank of Lewistown, Perry State Bank of Hannibal, The Paris National Bank of Paris and the Macon Atlanta Bank of Macon and used a $750,000 grant to make repairs at homes in Lewis, Macon, Marion, Monroe and Ralls counties.
A year later, NECAC was awarded Federal Home Loan Bank grants totaling $338,724 to repair apartment complexes in Steelville, Bourbon, Cuba, New London and Monroe City.
Also in 2007, NECAC teamed up with the American Bank of Missouri in Montgomery City to make repairs at homes in Montgomery County.
Applications for the latest round of improvements are being taken at the NECAC Pike County Service Center at 805 Business Highway 61 in Bowling Green or the NECAC Lincoln County Service Center at 11 Woodcrest Drive in Troy.
