Junior Troop 9308 update – Girls give to community

Girl Scout Junior Troop 9308 boasts 12 girls in the troop from three different schools: Bowling Green, Frankford and Vandalia.

This year the girls have been working to complete their community service hours that are required to earn the Bronze Award.  They are well on our way, with a combined 110 hours of community service hours so far.  The girls are required to earn 20 hours of community service each.  Many have gone beyond that and have found that they enjoy doing it.

The girls decided to focus on community needs and how they could meet those needs.

They participated in Poverty Awareness Day to bring awareness to poverty in our community by collecting items at Wal-Mart for the Hope Center.

The girls also sponsored a coat drive that turned into a friendly competition between schools.  They gathered so many coats that it took two vans to transport them to the area Hope Centers.

The girls purchased items at Dollar Store to fill shoe boxes to send to the neediness areas in the world as boxes of Hope for Christmas through Samaritans Purse.

The girls enjoyed caroling at the area nursing homes for Christmas while they delivered homemade decorations for the dining tables.

Most recently they have begun to make pillow case dresses to send with a Haiti mission team that they have learned about through Second Baptist Church.

The girls have enjoyed several outings such as a sleepover at The Magic House in St. Louis as well as a Girl Scout wide event in Hannibal at the YMCA called “Feed the Flame”.

The girls sold candy and cookies this year to earn money to be able to support the work they do in and around our community to help those less fortunate.

The girls plan to finish their year and community service hours by sponsoring a blood drive.  The American Red Cross blood drive involved the girls planning the marketing, meeting with the Red Cross officials, planning snacks for the blood drive and registration of donors.

The girls will celebrate with a special ceremony honoring them with their Bronze Award.
