Catherine P. (Bontz) Runyon

Catherine P. (Bontz) Runyon, age 79, of Vandalia, passed away unexpectedly at 9:47 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Visitation was scheduled from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013 at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia.

Service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Waters Funeral Chapel. Officiating was Pastor Jamie Franke.

Interment was in the Vandalia Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Doug Bontz, Steve Bontz, Jared Runyon, Frank Welch, Wayne Lynn, and Donald Lynn.

Catherine P. (Bontz) Runyon was born on December 23, 1933 in rural Ralls County, north of Vandalia, the daughter of Herman Leslie and Willie Faye (Benn) Bontz.

She was married to Joseph A. Runyon on December 1, 1951 in Hannibal, Mo.; he preceded her in death on May 26, 1994.

She was a lifelong resident of the Vandalia area.

Catherine worked at the International Shoe Factory in Vandalia for several years and then the Bobby Brooks Garment Factory. She started working at the Tri-County Care Center and worked as a CNA and MedTech there for many years, retiring in 2012.

Catherine was a member of the First Christian Church in Vandalia where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, and worked in the nursery. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning, watching QVC, Cardinal ballgames, and she was an avid reader.

Survivors include three sons: Joey E. and wife, Kathy Runyon of New London; James A. and wife, Shannon Runyon of Higbee, Mo.; Aaron F. and wife, Karen Frances Runyon of Vandalia; one sister: Donna L. and husband, Donald Hoover of Vandalia; seven grandchildren: Amber Runyon and Jared Runyon both of New London; Rhiannon Runyon and Aidan Runyon both of Higbee; Kristen Rutherford, Kayla Rutherford and Kathryn Runyon, all of Vandalia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph A.; one daughter, Cathy Jo Runyon, who died during childbirth; three brothers: James E. Bontz, Eugene L. Bontz and Floyd F. Bontz.

Memorials are encouraged to the Shiloh Children’s Ranch in Shelbina, Mo.
