Highway 61 wreck injures two

Emergency personnel were quick to the scene of an accident Monday evening. The accident, which occurred at Cyrene on Highway 61, involved two Bowling Green residents, who were reporting moderate injuries.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene of an accident involving two Bowling Green residents Monday evening on Highway 61.

Around 4:20 p.m., an accident was reported to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. According to the report released by the troopers, an accident involving Marie Leverenz, 77, and Charles Cox, 82, both of Bowling Green, had occurred at Highway 61 and Pike County Road 308.

According to the Highway Patrol’s report, Cox’s 2005 Jeep Cherokee was traveling westbound on PC Road 308. Levernez, in her  2010 Ford Taurus, was driving southbound on the highway. Cox’s jeep pulled into the path of Leverenz on the highway. The front of the Jeep struck the left side of Leverenz’s Taurus.

The report indicates that both drivers were wearing seat belts, but sustained moderate injuries. Leverenz was taken to Hannibal Regional by a Pike County Ambulance. She was released Monday evening. Cox was taken by Air Evac to Barnes hospital in St. Louis for treatment of his injuries.

Both vehicles received extensive damage and were towed from the scene.
