NECC to host annual Torch Run

This year’s annual NECC Torch Run will be held on Wednesday, May 29 at the Bowling Green High School track.  The festivities will start at approximately 11 a.m.

Each year runners from Northeast Correctional Center and local law enforcement agencies join hands to lend their support and bring awareness to Missouri Special Olympics.  This year’s run will be 16 times around the track equaling four miles.

In addition to the run, a lunch will be available to help raise funds for Special Olympics.  There will also be local Special Olympic athletes present and they will walk a lap around the track with the Torch Runners to kick off the event.

NECC Special Olympics chairman Travis Case is inviting the public to come out and watch the run and and pay tribute to the Special Olympic athletes.

“Bowling Green area citizens have a strong awareness when it comes to Special Olympics and have always been very supportive,” Case said. “We would like to have a big turnout and invite everybody to come out, buy lunch and watch the run.”

However, he says, “If you can’t come out and watch we will make arrangements to have your lunch delivered to your local business if you let us know the day ahead of the run.”

Just call the switchboard at 573-324-9975 and they will take your order.

The run is not officially a race, however some runners choose to make it one.  The important part of the run is to make the public aware that law enforcement agencies and Northeast Correctional Center truly do care about these remarkable athletes and will continue to support them in any way that they possibly can.
