A former inmate at Bowling Green’s North East Correctional Center prison received a sentence earlier this month after damaging property within the prison.

Norman Baez, a 23-year-old man, previously of Monett, admitted and entered a guilty plea to damaging the sprinkler head in his cell and causing it to flood five different times in 2010. On one occasion, the inmate also destroyed a state-issued mattress and stuffed it into a toilet.

Pike County judge Chris Kunza Mennemeyer sentenced Baez to the Missouri Department of Corrections for five years, as well as five years of supervised probation. Baez was also ordered to pay $100 to the Law Enforcement Restitutution Fund and to complete 100 hours of community service within 12 months of his release from the DoC.

According to some reports, the only excuse Baez gave for his actions was that his cell was too warm. The former Bowling Green inmate is now serving a seven-year sentence for assault at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.
