Ecumenical VBS set for next week

Ecumenical Vacation Bible School in Louisiana will take place Monday through Friday, July 15-19 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 517 South Carolina Street.  It is free of charge and is open to all children in the community from the ages of three through eighth grade.  Though a record-setting crowd is expected, more participants are always welcome. Registration is available by calling the church office at 754-5557 or at the door once VBS begins.

A hot meal will be served by participating churches each evening in the church’s fellowship hall at 5:30 p.m. to children and the volunteers.  The “Kingdom Rock” VBS activities run from 6-8:30 p.m.  Each evening the kids gather in the church’s sanctuary and then go in small groups to the different learning stations.  This year’s theme is “Kingdom Rock: Where Kids Stand Strong For God.”

Children learn God’s Word as they participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, experience interactive Bible adventures, and experience God’s word through scientific activities.

Each evening there will be  a celebration in the church sanctuary as a wrap-up for what they’ve learned.  Parents and others interested in seeing a lively gathering of youth are welcome to attend any evening at 8 p.m.

Each year a mission project is supported by donations from attendees.  This year’s project is  Operation Kid to Kid. Children will be personalizing a booklet of Bible stories written in Hindi to reach thousands of children in India. Monetary donations will be accepted as well.

This annual ecumenical event is sponsored by Bethel AME, Calvary Episcopal, Elmwood Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, St. Joseph Catholic, Centenary United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, as well as First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Director of the program is Linda Shade and questions may be directed to her by calling 754-3225 or the church office at 754-5557.
