Volunteers make Pike County Fair
If you ask Pike County Fair officials what makes the annual July celebration of rural life a success, they will arrive at the same answer.
“They are absolutely essential,” said Fair Board President Vernon Korte. “We couldn’t have a fair without them.
“We rely on them to make the fair what it is and many come back year after year.”
Fair volunteer coordinator Sherry McCarty said about 400 people donate their time and efforts annually to run the fair’s multiple aspects.
“I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” McCarty said. “We have a running list from each year,” and she contacts individuals, businesses and non-profits who are on it for fair help.
“Some people even take their vacation to help out,” McCarty said.
One of them is Debra Smith, of Clarksville, who helps run the front gate.
