We asked, and you commented. Last week, the Bowling Green Times asked its Facebook followers what they think about the rights of transgendered individuals. Here are some of your answers…

Question:

“The state of California passed a law Monday that allows “transgendered students to choose which school bathrooms and locker rooms to use and which sport teams to join based on their gender identity.

What do you think, Pike County? Should transgender students have the option to choose which bathroom/locker room they use based on the gender they identify with? Will this law cause more harm than good?”

Your Answers*:

“Why is this even a question? I work with numerous transgendered patients as a nurse and their sexual identity is just another part of who they are. It’s not a mental disorder or something that needs to be “treated” as such. Its a biological condition they are born with …. their hormones are not being produced correctly to meet the anatomical structures they were also born with. They deserve the same respect as you and I. Until you have sat down and spoken with them … Do not judge …. They face a tough battle everyday because of scrutinizing questions such as this. It’s inappropriate.” – Sarah Mitalovich

“Gender Identity Disorder is what the media euphemize as “transgendered.” It is a mental disorder and these people with it should not be coddled and given special rights because they are unwilling to face their medical problems. Women reflexively fear men in their bathrooms and rightly so. This is another case of the left throwing the majority under the bus by means of deception…” – Ashlee N. Fessenden

“i had this debate a month ago with calif. friends. we agreed no way. a little boy going into the girls bathroom cause he wants to b a girl. is an invitation to trouble. plus most r too young to make such a major decision.” – Beverly Kirk Reynolds

“Umm I wouldn’t feel comfortable if this happened at my school that isn’t fair the the other people that would effect I would feel uncomfortable and not want to go to school” – Abbie Gee Litherland-nash

“As a nurse myself, we are required to determine there true gender for various reasons, one of which is room placement for admission. Let me tell you..when you try to place male patient that thinks he is a she in a semi private psych room with a female patient, hell breaks out!” – Elizabeth Mckinney

“If a child is transgendered and they identify with the other, say boy identify’s as a girl and girl as boy, then they should be able to use the bathroom that they identify with. Most of the girls bathrooms and guys bathrooms have stools that are covered by a covering so what difference is it going to make.” – Amber Alyse Grote
