by Kim Pafford, BGMS Principal
The summer has flown by and we are back in the swing of things at Bowling Green Middle School. We have had a great couple of opening days, and we hope the trend continues. Our enrollment is higher than usual with 320 students on our roster to start the 2013-2014 school year.
We have several new faces at the middle school. Our new assistant principal at the middle school and the elementary is Penny Copelin. Alison Brandt will be in the position of middle school counselor. Ashlee Labbee is our new middle school/high school nurse. Kris Cross has taken over our 8th Grade Pre-Algebra/Algebra classes. Amy Becker has moved from our Math department to take on our Computer classes. Ben Klingner is our new hire for 8th Grade Social Studies. Tyler Smith is joining us as our new aide at the alternative school. We are excited about all of our new staff and feel they are a great addition to our building.
We are continuing our goal at Bowling Green Middle School to increase service and leadership with our students this year.
We are continuing to focus on Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens.” We will be featuring a Habit monthly in our building and having classroom activities focused on each of the Habits. We hope that the book and the activities will assist our students in developing habits to become responsible and successful citizens.
In supporting our efforts for nurturing community-minded students, our Student Council members can earn credits by performing service to the community as well as at school.
We would like our students to become leaders at the forefront of our school as well as in our community, and we are looking for opportunities for that to happen.
If you have an event that you are in need of some help, please feel free to contact our Student Council Leaders or myself at school, and we will try to find some students who may be willing to lend a hand.
Our Student Council Sponsors this year are Mrs. Christina Allensworth, Mrs. Brandy Huber, and Ms. Emily Harrelson.
Our middle school athletics have begun. Our students are putting in a lot of hard work and unfortunately the weather has warmed up with the start of practice.
Our students competing have a long day and we encourage your students to bring an extra snack to munch on at the end of the school day to keep them going through the end of practice.
Our softball team kicks off our fall season with an opening game in Silex on Sept. 6. Middle School Volleyball hosts their first game on Sept. 12 at 5:30. Football begins on Sept. 17 at home versus Centralia at 5 p.m. Cross Country will host the Bowling Green Invitational on Sept. 16 at 4:15.
We hope to see everyone out supporting our students and our school.
We will begin Homework Advantage on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and offer assistance to our students every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until 4:15 p.m., unless we have an early out day.
Make sure to like Bowling Green Middle School on Facebook to stay updated on the latest happenings.
We also have the new Bowling Green R-1 app available for your smartphone that allows you access to your child’s information.
We have had a great start, and we hope it continues through the year.
Please feel free to call the middle school if you have any questions.
