Transportation officials, political leaders and residents from both sides of the Mississippi River are praising Friday morning’s ground breaking ceremony for the new Champ Clark Memorial Bridge as a momentous day in the history of Louisiana, Pike County, Mo., and Pike County, Illinois.
Building a new bridge spanning the Mississippi River has been a dream of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s and of local residents for years.
“This is such an important event,” Patrick McKenna said during the his remarks at Friday’s ceremony. McKenna currently serves as the director of the Missouri Department of Transportation. “Today is a great day for the citizens of Louisiana and for Pike County. I am sure that there are some people in the community who felt like this project would never happen.”
McKenna was one of several speakers during the hour-long ground breaking ceremony, which was held just steps away from the Mississippi River and with the current Champ Clark Memorial Bridge in the background.
