Area native awarded for prosthetic denistry research

Maj. Nicole Smith (Vazquez), United States Air Force, Dental Corps, daughter of Dan and Rose Ann Spegal of Bowling Green, is a 2014 graduate of the Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Fellowship, 59th Dental Training Squadron, Lackland AFB, Texas.

She received her dental degree (DMD) from the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (2008), certificate in Prosthodontics from Wilford Hall Medical Center (2013), and Masters of Science degree in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (2013).

Dr. Smith won first place for a poster presentation of her research, “Evaluation of the sealing capability of implants to titanium and zirconia abutments against Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum under different screw torque values,” at the 2013 American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics annual meeting in New Mexico.  Her research is being published in the Journal of  Prosthetic Dentistry.

Dr. Smith will be relocating to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, with her husband, Chris, a Project Manager for LeMay Engineering, and stepson, Alex, who will be a junior at Eagle River High School.
