The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Bowling Green High School Alumnus Phillip Lagemann, a member of the graduating class of 2015, last week as the South Central Region Male Athlete of the Year.
Lagemann is currently a senior at the University of St. Mary, which is located in Leavenworth, Kansas. He is the son of Mark and Judy Lagemann, of Bowling Green. He is the grandson of the late Maurice and Anna Illy, of Elsberry, Mo., and James Philip and Wilma Lagemann, of Eolia.
As a member of the St. Mary Cross Country team, Lagemann competed at the NAIA National Championships, where he placed fourth with a time of 24:32. Lagemann’s placement earned the former Bowling Green resident his second straight collegiate All-American status.
As a team, the St. Mary Spirits placed fifth out of 36 teams.
In other races this season, Lagemann also found success.
He won the 2018 KCAC Championship, with a time of 24:47.3, which was nearly a full-minute faster than the second-place finisher.
Lagemann also won three other individual titles this season — the Bearcat Open, the Muthama-Rogers Invitational and the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede.
Prior to being a student athlete at the University of St. Mary, Lagemann was a student-athlete at Allen Community College. Allen Community College is located in Iola, Kansas.
During his time at Bowling Green High School, Lagemann was consistently one of the best runners in the Eastern Missouri Conference. Lagemann would earn all-conference honors and all-district honors in high school.
