Bowling Green High School Track and Cross Country Coach Matt Chance has been selected as one of the 50 coaches in the nationwide program sponsored by U.S. Cellular that seeks to highlight coaches that have made an impact in their community.
In a telephone interview, Chance said he first learned of the program three to four weeks ago.
“It was one of those days where I was really, really busy with other things and I got this voicemail,” Chance said. “It was kind of vague and I thought it might be a telemarketer or something. So I didn’t think too much about it.”
However, when program organizers called Chance back two weeks later, they stressed to him that it was a legitimate program.
Then on Tuesday, September 18, a news release from U.S. Cellular’s corporate office made the news public.
Chance said he was stunned to see how quickly the news spread throughout the community.
“I started getting all these mentions on Facebook,” Chance said. “It is really overwhelming. I know my Cross Country kids are really having fun with it, telling me everyday the percentage of votes that I have or the number of votes that I got that day.”
Chance is referring to the current stage in the competition where members of the public can log into a website, TheMostValuableCoach.Com, and cast their daily vote for their most favorite coach.
This voting process will continue until 11:59 a.m. on October 8.
