Changes coming to county fair queen pageants

Posted on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 1:51 pm

For the first time in the 162-years of the Pike County Fair, three Pike Countians will share the responsibilities of being county fair royalty.
Last week it was announced that this year the Pike County Fair Board would be recognizing Ms. Pike County Fair and Jr. Miss Pike County Fair Queen, in addition to the traditional Pike County Fair Queen.
Lori Fuerst, who is organizing the two new pageants, said in a recent interview that the Ms. Pike County Fair is for Pike County women who are over the age of 55.
“It is just a fun thing for them to do,” Fuerst said. The theme of the pageant is “Country Rodeo,” and contestants are encouraged to wear blue jeans, a denim skirt, boots and a snap-button shirt.
Fuerst said she is hopeful that in this inaugural year that the pageant will feature between 10-15 contestants.
“We are committed to seeing this through,” Fuerst said. “This is our trial year, but it will be something that we do more than just this one year.”
The winner of the Ms. Pike County Fair pageant will receive a cash prize, a tiara, and will receive free admission into the Pike County Fair and the county fairs of all adjoining fairs, according to Fuerst.
According to the registration packet provided by the county fair board, the Ms. Pike County Fair must meet the following criteria: must be a U.S. citizen; must have resided in Pike County for at least six months; and must never have been convicted of any felonies or have charges pending against her.
Candidates in the Ms. Pike County Fair pageant will compete on Tuesday, July 25, at the small stage of the Pike County Fairgrounds.
