Debate over Charter Schools comes to Pike County

Opinions differ on impact of charter schools on Pike County’s four school districts

Kristen Starner, a lobbyist and an advocate for charter school expansion, speaks to attendees at a town hall style meeting hosted by the Republicans of Pike County Club. During the meeting, several local residents spoke out against the charter school expansion and debated both Starner and Rep. Jim Hansen on the merits of the proposed legislation that would allow for the expansion of charter schools throughout Missouri.

Last month, the Republicans of Pike County hosted a town hall style meeting that attempted to answer questions regarding the potential impact charter school expansion in the state would have on the four local school districts in Pike County: BONCL R-X, Bowling Green R-I, Louisiana R-II, and Pike County R-III (Clopton).
Currently, the state’s General Assembly has limited Charter Schools to operating only within certain geographic areas, such as metropolitan Kansas City and St. Louis. That may change this upcoming legislative session, as legislation has been pre-filed that would allow for the expansion of charter schools throughout the Show-Me state depending on how students score on end-of-course assessments…
