The Ducks Unlimited organization will soon begin construction on a $6.25 million infrastructure project at the Clarence Cannon Wildlife Refuge in rural Pike County, according to Ducks Unlimited Public Affairs Coordinator Chris Sebastian.
In an interview, Sebastian said the project’s focus is to help restore 2,424 acres of wetland habitat. The construction project is expected to be finished later this fall.
“Water is crucial to the breeding and migration and everything in between for waterfowl,” Sebastian said in a telephone interview last week. “So what we are going to be doing with this project is to help construct berms and dykes that will help hold water in these wetlands. Then, we are also going to be replacing equipment within a pump station there at Clarence Cannon.”

Trees are reflected in the water as a Northern Shoveler swims through the waters of Clarence Cannon Wildlife Refuge in rural Pike County.
Northern Shovelers are commonly known as Smiling Mallards and are one of the more frequently seen breeds of ducks this time of year at the aforementioned refuge.
