Louisiana, MO: The Elks of Louisiana Lodge 791 are busy planning the 47th Annual George Keith Memorial Scholarship Chicken BBQ.
Chairman Danny Wood Jr. inherited the responsibility from his dad last year. He and the committee are putting the final touches on purchases and planning for the event and hope to raise money for the funds.
Five students will benefit from the labors of the committee and its volunteers. Clopton, Louisiana, Bowling Green and Pleasant Hill students who are graduating this year have the opportunity to apply for $1,000 each year. Another scholarship is available for the child of an Elk member.
This year’s event will be held Saturday, June 1. Food will be served starting at 11 a.m. Wood and a crew of volunteers light the grills at about 4 a.m. A slow grill and basting makes for juicy BBQ goodness, a recipe that has been perfected over 47 years. In addition to the chicken, the meal includes baked beans (reportedly some of the best in the county) and coleslaw.
Carry-out, curbside and delivery are also available for those who do have time to eat in. However, those that have time always enjoy it by socializing with friends and neighbors while enjoying their BBQ.
All Elks members have tickets available for sale but meals can be purchased the day of the event as well. Elks who would like to volunteer are asked to stop by the lodge to sign up or call. Phone orders will be taken beginning at 8 a.m. the day of the event. Call 573-754-5890 to order. Meals are $9.
