Most of you are familiar with the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip. Well, on one Mother’s Day, Calvin is pictured standing by his mother’s bed.
“Hey, Mom! Wake up. I made you a Mother’s Day card.”
“My, how sweet of you,” she says.
“I did it all by myself. Go ahead and read it.”
She begins to read…
“I was going to buy a card with hearts of pink & red. But then I thought I’d rather spend the money on me instead. It’s awfully hard to buy things when one’s allowance is so small. So I guess you’re pretty lucky I got you anything at all. Happy Mother’s Day. There, I’ve said it. Now I’m done. So how about getting out of bed & fixing breakfast for your son.”
“I’m deeply moved.” said his mother.
“Did you notice the part about my allowance?” He asks.
Well, some of you may feel like Calvin’s mother wondering if anybody’s going to say on Mother’s Day, “Thank you, Mom, for all the good stuff you do.”
Mothers have a very difficult job. They have to do a big balancing act between their job, school activities, sport’s schedule, house work and parenting. Have you ever been discouraged? Motherhood isn’t for the weak or faint-hearted, is it? God doesn’t bless you with Motherhood then leave you to hang out to dry. Mothers need a lot of encouragement on a daily basis. He’s given you His Word to encourage you, to help you, to bless you, to comfort you and give you direction. God has an encouraging word for each of you … especially Mothers.
Isaiah 40:28-31: “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. 29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. 30 Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men and women will fall in exhaustion. 31 But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (NLT)
When you feel like giving up … don’t! Why? Because God “understands” – 40:28b
Can you identify with 40:29? Here is your word of encouragement from God. “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NLT)
Your Heavenly Father is always there to help you. He’s got lots of experience in this area. God’s Word is full of helpful words of encouragement – for example: Psalm 32:8; Psalm 46:1; Psalm 27:14; Proverbs 3:5-6: Philippines 4:6-7, 19.
Mothers, don’t give up. Help is on the way. When you get discouraged, open up God’s Word, and read His message to you and then you can say along with the Apostle Paul … “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Being a mother is a tough job and we recognize and honor you on Mother’s Day.
