Fall Poultry Fest held in Silex

Posted on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 3:29 pm

On Saturday, Sept. 14 the River Hills and Wind Ridge Farmers held their annual Fall Poultry Fest at the Silex R-1 School.

Over 40 farmers and growers participated offering everything from exotic Norwegian Flower Fowl and Phoenix bantams, leeks and tomatoes in numerous hues, to fine crafts and goats’ milk soaps.

Farmers from several states attend this event and there were several demonstrations on evaluating laying hens, producing and marketing select table eggs, and bread selection for the home flock and youth project work.

The competition to select the Best Rooster in the River Hills is always popular and, while numbers were down a bit, the judges agreed that it was a
competitive class with all of the birds showing value as seedstock.

The winner was a large fowl Rhode Island Red Rosecombed rooster shown by Kaleb
Peak of Wellsville. Kaleb is the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Peak.

The egg show was equally as competitive with good representatives of white, brown, and blue shelled eggs. The winner was Tom Whitson of Pena, Ill. with a set of large, brown shelled eggs.

The River Hills and Wind Ridge markets now have a buyer of surplus roosters and older poultry stock as a regular participant.

The River Hills
group will have two more markets in 2013 beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Silex City Park. The dates for those markets are  Oct. 12, preceding the Silex
Fall Festival, and Nov. 9. The group’s annual fall business meeting will follow the market on Nov. 9, the group’s annual Holiday Market.

On Nov. 1 through 2 the group will conduct an exhibit of heirloom poultry breeds and a demo market at the National Small Farm Today Show in Columbia. Contact numbers for the group are 660-998-0445 or 573-485-7261.
