Federal regulations push BG R-I lunch program into debt – Participation deceasing, costs increasing

The USDA’s increasingly-restrictive regulations on food service at the country’s public schools have made national headlines for the last few years. Locally, the Bowling Green R-I Districts are feeling the constriction.

According to BG R-I Superintendent Darin Powell’s most recent reports, the district is $48 thousand dollars in the red on the schools’ lunches alone.

At this month’s July 15 Board of Education meeting, the board voted unanimously to enact a 10 cent increase on the meal. Between that and the five cent increase on breakfasts, Powell hopes to increase monthly revenue from the meals by about $4,000.
