The first Brenda Eskew Memorial Scholarship was awarded this spring to Maryland Smith. The alternate was Megan Hakenwerth. Both young women are members of the Bowling Green High School class of 2013.
Mrs. Brenda Eskew, who lost her courageous fight with cancer in September of 2012, was a counselor at BGHS from 1989 to 2009. Her family established this scholarship in her memory, noting that “she had a true zest for life” and that her “students were her second family.” Mrs. Eskew was greatly concerned with the students she counseled, especially those who had “sometimes become lost in the system.”
The Brenda Eskew Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating senior at BGHS planning to attend an educational institution or program in order to further his or her education. The emphasis is on financial need along with extracurricular participation, work history, or a combination of both.
