Gilbert Schuckenbrock, 87, of rural Bowling Green, is pictured at his last night of working at the Ashley Fish Fry. Schuckenbrock has volunteered and served as ticket salesman at the local fish fry since 1981. During his tenure within the booth, Schuckenbrock become well known for his humorous stories and quick wit.
On Friday, Gilbert Schuckenbrock told a family waiting in line at the Ashley Fish Fry the story of two young boys who were always in mischief and everyone in town knew it.
As Gilbert’s story went, the two boys got into a fight with their mother one day about their wayward behavior and their mother told them she was going to send them down to meet with the local preacher, because she wanted the preacher to straighten her boys out. She called down and arranged a meeting for the older boy for that morning. The older boy went to the preacher. When he arrived, the preacher sat the boy down, grabbed him by the arms, and asked him — ‘Where’s God?’
Gilbert said the little boy didn’t know how to answer so he didn’t say anything.
When he didn’t say anything in response, Gilbert said the preacher asked him a little louder, ‘Where’s God?’
The little boy still didn’t know how to answer and just sat quietly. The third time that the preacher asked the boy the question, Gilbert said the preacher just hollered at him, ‘Where’s God?’
Gilbert said, the preacher yelling like that scared the little boy who ran all the way home. When he got home, he got his little brother and he said they needed to hide.
‘The preacher’s lost God and they think we got him,” the older brother explained.
The family was still laughing about Gilbert’s story as they walked up to the serving window.
Stories like that, often infused with humor similar to that of Hee Haw — the famed American comedy show, which ran from 1969 to 1997 — have endeared Gilbert Schuckenbrock to the hundreds of people who attend the Ashley Fish Fry each week during Lent.
Friday night’s story was even more poignant as Schuckenbrock had announced that he was retiring from his position of ticket sales, a post he has held since 1981.
