“God Bless America”

Deuteronomy 31:16-18 says  16And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whether they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.  17Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?  18And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

When Sept. 11, 2001, occurred America invoked God more than they had in the past.  Irvin Berlin’s song God Bless America has climbed to the top of the music charts it would seem.

But do we as Christians, much less all of America, understand what we are asking when we say God, Bless America?  Is this a mere chant?  Does it have no greater significance than simply, have a nice day?  Or how’s it going?  Or does it indeed recognize an obligation on the citizen’s part?

For most of our American history, Americans believed there is a strong relationship between our conduct as a people and our fate as a nation.  What do you think?  You can’t keep slapping God in the face as an individual or as a nation and expect God’s blessing.  Never interpret God’s patience as God’s approval.  God does not approve of sin!  Thank God for grace!!  It really is amazing.

After all, what right do we have to ask God to bless us?  Has God obligated himself to America more than any other nation in history, including Israel?  Is America any better than England or Germany?  There are many promises in the word of God, but most carry a condition.  If we want to be blessed, then we must obey God.  Is America the greatest nation in the world?  Why?  Freedom you say, so does Canada, Australia, Japan and over 100 other nations.

Maybe it’s because of our literacy.  America ranked 15th out of 27 nations in 2008.  How about our math and science?  In 2006 our math rating was 35 out of 57 nations compared and our science rating was 29th out of 57 nations compared.

Maybe America is great because of our health care and life expectancy.  In 2009 we ranked 50th out of 223 nations in that category.

In 2011 our labor force ranked 4th in the world.  We do lead the world in the number of incarcerated persons per-capata.

The richest and the most blessed country, is starting to slide down into immorality and sin because God is no longer leading us as He once did.  Isn’t it time we asked ourselves what’s going on?  Make no mistake, I love our country, but I have a great concern as to what my children and grandchildren will inherit.  Do you?

The future of America depends upon a choice, not of Republicans or Democrats, but of God leading our nation.  I’m not usually an alarmist but for the first time in my life, I’d say we could be in the beginning of the last days.  America has turned to its own wicked ways like Israel.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28 says  26“Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse.  27a blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:  28and a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.”

America is choosing the curse.  God’s not looking for emotion – like God Bless America.  God is looking for devotion – like honoring the Ten Commandments.  United we stand, divided we fall also pertains to the Kingdom of God.  We are forsaking all that is God ordained.

Not taking God’s word seriously is the greatest threat to national security there is.  Because my fellow American and Christian – God will one day stop blessing America, just as He did the Israelites.

I leave you with an excerpt from Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story” as he tells of  Senator Joe Wright’s prayer to the Kansas House:  Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and seek your direction and guidance.  We know your Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good,” but that’s exactly what we’ve done.  We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values, we confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of your Word and called it moral pluralism, we have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism, we have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery, we have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation, we have rewarded laziness and called it welfare, we have killed our unborn and called it choice, we have shot abortionists and called it justifiable, we have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem, we have abused power and called it political savvy, we have coveted our neighbors’ possessions and called it ambition, we have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression, we have ridiculed the time-honored values of our fore-fathers and called it enlightenment. Will you help me to pray the greatness back into America where God ruled, people obeyed God.

Then and only then will He bless America.  That’s when America will truly be free again.
