James Monroe Kirk, 87, of Mexico, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at the Missouri Veterans Home.
Graveside services with full military honors were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Lawn Memorial Park with Raymond Iman officiating. Visitation was Saturday from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home.
James was born May 10, 1925 in Bowling Green, the son of Charles and Jessica (Ogden) Kirk. On Oct. 10, 1948 in Harrison, Arkansas, he married Gloria Brown. She survives.
Mr. Kirk was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII in the Pacific. He worked in the construction industry as a brick mason and built his own home along with several other homes.
James loved hunting, especially raccoons, deer and turkey. He looked forward to his Colorado trips, where he would hunt elk with his sons-in-law and friends. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gold panning. The family took yearly vacations camping to the western states, where they enjoyed many national parks. James loved his grandkids and taught them how to fish, frog hunt, use his hunting guns, and spent many hours riding the four-wheeler. He planted a garden every year and really loved the outdoors, where he knew all the tree names.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria of the home; one son, Stephen J. Kirk and wife, Jan of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Linda R. Ryan and husband, Mark of Denver, Colo. and Leisa K. Miller and husband, Ken of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Gina Kirk of Scottsdale, Ariz., Stephen James Kirk and wife, Nicole of Detroit, Mich., Ashley Kirk of Los Angeles, Calif., Scott Ryan and Rebecca Ryan, both of Denver, Colo., Lauren Wade and husband, Ed of San Diego, Cal., Kristin Miller, Ryan Miller and Lindsey Miller, all of Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Mary Wangler of Louisiana, Mo.
Mr. Kirk was preceded in death by one brother, William Todd and one sister, Leona Miller.
