Massman Construction has brought a special guest to the Champ Clark Bridge construction party.
The company’s biggest crane, the Manitowoc 7000, arrived on-site on Wednesday, June 13, and will assist in placing the main infrastructure for the new Champ Clark Bridge.
The steel girders will begin to be placed on the Illinois side later this month while working their way across to the Missouri side thanks to the new crane.
“It will erect the steel girders that are on the bridge. That’s what it was brought here for. It will also assist with the demolition of the old bridge,” Constuction Project Manager T.J. Colombatto said.
“It’s a 350 ton max capacity and we can put up to 400 ft. of boom on it. We’re not going to operate it here with that much boom but but we’re going to start out at 200 ft. then we’re going to increase it to 300 ft. at some point.”
The crane weighs around 870 tons and is barge mounted.
Even with its massive structure the Manitowoc 7000 only needs two people to operate.
“It only takes one operator and there is an oiler that assists the operator doing maintenance,” Colombatto said.
“It’s as simple as the other cranes and there’s no difference in terms of operation.”

The Manitowoc 7000 rests easy before the task of putting the steel girders onto the new Champ Clark Bridge later this month. To learn more about the crane, attend the public meeting held by Massman on Saturday, June 23, at 10 a.m. in Riverview Park.
