“Are We There Yet?”

This is a question, I assume I will hear a hundred time over on our trip back to Washington state.  We are taking our children, Rose and Brandon with us on a long road trip.  Yes, I said road trip. We will be staying in Nebraska and Wyoming on the way there.  We will go through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Washington one way and go back through Washington, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois.  I don’t  know how the pioneers did it with their children.  We are prepared with portable DVD players, portable game systems, car games, car bingo, car atlas games, mad libs, license plate games and a lot of prayers for patience.

While there we will show Brandon and Rose; Tri-Cities (Pasco, Kennewick and Richland), Ephrata,  the Columbia River, the Nuclear site where the nuclear bomb was created, the Yakima Indian Reservation, the Whitman Mission where the Whitman Massacre took place, Sacajawea Park and Museum, the Grand Coulee Dam, take them on the Keller Grade and have them ride the ferry across and take the route Ron took to school every day on that ferry and many other sites.  They will meet family and friends and be on the go almost constantly but they still will say; “Are We There Yet?” among the other famous sibling car phrases.

As adults in our faith journey we often cry out to God;  Are We There Yet? Are you done taking us on this roller coaster ride of life?  Have we not done all you asked?  Lord, we are tired, are we there yet?

Remember when Moses led the people out of Egypt? That was the original cry of, ‘are we there yet’? And they weren’t there for 40 years, wandering around the desert.  They impatiently were waiting for their arrival at their destination, generations after generation, repeating the same question. The other things they whined about were having the same food over and over and over day after day and wanting to go home to Egypt. Today we still are doing that not knowing where God is taking us because we don’t listen to him as we should. We whined a lot to God and we do not show our Thanks and yes I did capitalize Thanks.

Galatians 6:9-10 in the The Message (MSG) an interpretation of the Bible by Eugene Peterson says, “ So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.”

Don’t get tired of waiting; don’t get tired of not getting where you want to get to as fast as you want. It’s in God’s time not ours and He will let us know when we are there. Some of us are there and some of aren’t there yet.  Some of us still have a long way to go, so where are you at.

See you all when we return.
