The Board of Education came to a decision Monday night that will delight district teachers, coaches, and students alike.
The long awaited weight room project was fully approved during the Board’s meeting Monday, March 17. A masonry bid from Martin General Contractors was unanimously approved and will cover the entire construction project.
This news would not be as exciting if it was not needed so desperately. Student athletes and coaches have been pulling for the project to move forward over the last several months.
“It’s not somewhere you want to be,” explained BGHS senior Austin Sloan.
The coaches and teachers agree wholeheartedly.
Head football coach Jeff Gschwender, who approached the Board with another teacher and coach last week to voice their concerns over the current weight room, added, “There are numerous aspects about our field house that make it hard to follow all codes that are recommended for weight rooms that are supplied with free weights.”
The weight room, as it exists now, is also the football team’s locker room, homed in the field house near the football field. The room is comprised of several smaller rooms, an arrangement that does not allow teachers and coaches to supervise the entire group at once. New construction will solve this problem.
One source says that about 52 percent of the student body at BGHS are athletes. Every single one of these young individuals utilizes the weight room at some point in time.
