By the time you read this column Christmas will have arrived.  All of our Pike County schools will have dismissed and all of our K-6 children, including our Y 21st CCLC extended day kids, will be home for Christmas break until Jan. 2.

The staff of the Twin Pike Family Y, which includes the afterschool staff members who supervise your children at each respective school site, are keeping the community of Newtown, Conn. in our thoughts and prayers, particularly the family and friends of those who lost their lives during the shooting.  We hope they find peace and comfort.

The safety and well being of children in our care has been and always will be our top priority.  We want to take this opportunity to remind you of some of the safety and security procedures we have in place at all our afterschool sites:

At all of our sites we have a security check in and check out system.  All children are supervised by qualified adults and very close attention is given to adult/child ratios.

We constantly strive to make sure that the communications between regular school day staff, including building principals, and after school staff are in place.

We take attendance daily and have the attendance available at all times during the program.  We also have all student registrations, which includes all emergency information on site at all times.  Part of our partnerships includes local law enforcement and local fire departments as well as multiple county agencies.

We are fully licensed with the Missouri Department of Health and have always maintained a full compliance status.

Just last year we revised an emergency plan for each afterschool site.  We will be making a concerted effort to review our emergency procedures before school starts up again in January.  Last, but not least, we strive to maintain a strong relationship with all parents in our program which proves time after time to be invaluable.

As always, thank you for being such an important part of our Twin Pike Y 21st CCLC family.  We greatly appreciate your participation and support.  If you have not already enrolled your children in our after school program, we hope you will consider doing so as we start the 2013 year.

On behalf of everyone at the Twin Pike Family Y and each of the Pike County elementary 21st CCLC after school programs, we send best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.
