The Bowling Green High School National Honor Society is known as a group of scholars and humanitarians who frequently go the extra mile to help those around them. The now three-year-old “Every child, every day” weekend backpack lunch program has served as a way for NHS members to reach out to the less fortunate of the area.
“A team of 12 students went to the elementary cafeteria once a week where we packed bags with food items for weekends or holiday vacation days for 85 to 95 students,” explained Mary Kay Thomas, sponsor of the National Honor Society at BGHS. “We did this in conjunction with the Ministerial Alliance.”
With a few years under their belts, the NHS members and volunteers are getting the activity down to a science. Although little has changed within the backpack program, Thomas explained they’re happy to continue their efforts.
“Not much has changed since we started except the number of bags we pack have increased each year and we are better organized,” she said.
Thomas is proud to say that her students are quick to come together and readily continue the program’s efforts.
