Pike Co. Youth Fair cattle show

The Pike County Youth Fair Cattle and Bucket Calf Show took place on Thursday, July 25.  The evening began with the bucket calf class followed by the dairy cattle, then breeding stock and completed with the steer show.

The bucket calf class is judged mainly on the exhibitor’s knowledge and care of the animal.

Donni Reading exhibited the Champion Bucket Calf and her trophy was sponsored by Doris Twellman, CPA.   Brandon Gamm showed the Reserve Champion Bucket Calf.  Donni Reading was awarded the Bucket Calf Herdsman Award.  The sponsor for the Trophy chair was Rich Edmond Insurance.  Others receiving blue ribbons were: Ellie Beauchamp, Cole Hunter, and Payton Teasley.

In the Dairy Cattle Show, the Best of Show went to Lacey Reading with her Jersey Junior Yearling Heifer, sponsored by Bank of Louisiana.  The Dairy Showmanship winner was Daniel Reading, sponsored by Len Scherder.  Lacey  Reading received a blue ribbon in the Jersey Junior Yearling Heifer class and Daniel Reading received a blue in the Jersey Cow class.

The following is a list of winners and trophy donors:  Champion Angus Bull, Connor Shannon; Champion Crossbred Bull, Brooke Bruns; Grand Champion Bull, Brooke Bruns, Bruce and Stephanie Meyer; Reserve Grand Champion Bull, Conner Shannon; Champion Angus Female, Connor Shannon; Champion Charlois Female, Katy Horner; Reserve Champion Charlois Female, Kelsey Horner; Champion  Lim-Flex Female, Peyton Sambo; Champion Maine Anjou Female, Brooke Bruns; Champion and Reserve Champion Simmental Female, Avery Hall; Champion Crossbred Female, Scott Bybee; and Reserve Champion Crossbred Female, Luke Bruns.  Grand Champion Beef Female, Brooke Bruns, Sachs Simmental and Angus Farm; Reserve Grand Champion Beef Female, Avery Hall; and Grand Champion Steer was shown by Luke Bruns.

The trophy sponsor was Bowling Green Lumber.  Kara Meyer exhibited Reserve Grand Champion Steer.  Storch Ford sponsored the trophy.  In the Home Raised Steer Class, the steer must have been born and raised while owned by the exhibitor.   Brooke Bruns owned Champion Home Raised Steer and Austin Bailey owned Reserve Champion Home Raised Steer.  Brooke received $100 and a trophy sponsored by Keithley Hereford Farms.

Taking top honors in showmanship were Luke Bruns in the junior division, Brooke Bruns in the intermediate division, and Kelsey Horner in the senior division.  Trophy sponsors were Pike County Mutual Insurance, Shaw Angus Farm, and Split Rail Animal Clinic.  The Herdsman Award was presented to Loren Niemeyer, trophy chair sponsored by Pike Feed.
