Members of the Bobcat Bonanza committee at Bowling Green High School were thrilled on Tuesday, Dec. 18, to learn they had earned a $500 grant from the Missouri Retired Teachers Association through their foundation.

Jim Kreider, treasurer of the Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation, and Deborah Ingram, vice president of the local region and a retired Bowling Green teacher, presented the check to committee members.

The Bobcat Bonanza was one of only 14 recipients of the grant. 84 applications for the Classroom Grants were received by MRTA this year.

“I heard about the grant from Mrs. Kathy Berlin, a retired BGHS teacher. Louise Mason, a retired principal and school board member for BG R-1, also provided me with information,” said Stacie Smith, a member of the Bobcat Bonanza committee. “Miss Lipp did the lion’s share of the work for the Bonanza and the grant.”

Misty Lipp, Spanish teacher at BGHS, steered the Bobcat Bonanza Committee and, together with Mrs. Smith, put together the grant application.

The $500 grant will be used to provide a meal for students and their families who attend the Bonanza, according to Mrs. Smith.

The Bobcat Bonanza has five stated goals: to offer a positive school encounter for students and their families; to provide a smooth transition from middle school to high school by allowing students to familiarize themselves with the school building and staff; to present information on new procedures and pertinent grade level information; to bring community and school together for the success of the students; and to increase student participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
