BGE News!

Emilie Allensworth, Principal, Bowling Green Elementary

It is so hard to believe that the 13/14 school year is coming to an end already! It has been such a fast and fantastic year! MAP testing is underway for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, field trips are quickly approaching, summer school will be here before you know it, and we are already doing some planning for the 14/15 school year.

As this will be my last newsletter of the year I felt this was a great time to thank all parents and community members for the support you regularly provide our students and staff.

The greatness of our school resonates daily in the smiling faces of our wonderful kids, and I, along with the entire staff, never forget that it’s thanks to you that we have this joy to look forward to on a daily basis.

Thank you for allowing us to impact your child’s academic journey and supporting us along the way!

Please see below for some very important information and reminders to finish out this year and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you have.

BGE Summer

School 2014

Summer school forms are being returned quickly to our office. The deadline for returning them was April 29 and on last count we were well over 100 for our attendance! If you would still like to sign your child up, please call our office to get the required form. We are happy to accept any students into our great program!

All students will have access to free breakfast and lunch thanks to a grant received by our school. Our hours are 8 to 3 Monday through Friday, June 2 through 27. Transportation is not provided, but there is an afterschool program available through our YMCA for $40 for the entire four weeks of summer school.

We offer Jumpstart for our future kindergarten students, Remediation and Enrichment to our current kindergarten through fifth graders. It is a great opportunity for students to continue to practice some of their academic skills under the guidance of members of our certified teaching staff. We look forward to a great 2014 Summer School!

Field Trips are Coming Up!

Plans are finalized and letters have or will be sent home very soon with the details for the 2014 Bowling Green Elementary Field Trips! Thanks to our PTO for once again funding a large portion of our end-of-the-year field trips! The students and teachers are all very excited for their fun-filled days!

A few reminders for students and parents:

• Clothing should be weather and activity appropriate.

• Sunblock may be necessary.

• Parents should have conversations with children in regard to best trip behavior. BGE students are the best and we want everyone to see it that way!

• Parents should be sure that our offices and/or teachers have the most current contact information just in case a call needs to be made.

• Parents can discuss with students how to be safe while on off-campus trips. (staying with the group, listening to the adults in charge, strangers, bus safety…)

The trips are scheduled for the following dates and locations.

• April 22- Pre-K to Big Joel’s Safari

• April 30- Kindergarten to The Magic House

• May 2- First Grade to Hannibal Cinema

• May 9- Third Grade to St. Louis Zoo

• May 12- Fourth Grade to Mark Twain Cave

• May 13- Fifth Grade to Hannibal for bowling and trolley ride

• May 15- Second Grade to Butterfly House

Preparations for 14/15 are Underway!

At BGE we are beginning to prepare for the 14/15 school year. The teachers and I have started working to create next year’s class lists.

We appreciate the trust you show in us to make the best decision possible for the placement of your BGE student(s). This is not a job we take lightly which is why this process is well underway.

Decisions will be finalized by mid-summer with class lists being posted on Friday, Aug. 1 in the glass hallway of our building, which is in the back off of the high school parking lot.

While it is best to allow us to place children based on what we know of them as students in our school and in regard to the mixture of classmates we must consider, we understand that some circumstances warrant specific requests.

Any specific requests should be submitted in writing to me by May 31 for consideration. Please know that our goal is to provide the best, most beneficial school experience for all of our children and we will do our best to place students accordingly.

Our Back to School Night is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 12 5:30 to 6:30. Families can come in to meet the teachers, unpack school supplies, make bus/pick-up arrangements, and much more! School supply lists will go home with fourth quarter grade cards again this year!
