Sequestration budget cuts affect Head Start

Federal budget cuts, under sequestration, have become an unfortunate and dreaded reality for Pike County’s child care.

Last week, Douglass Community Services (DCS), which handles Bowling Green’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs, announced that 28 of its 100 Pike County student slots have been cut for the coming school year. DCS will also be forced  to eliminate 18 staff positions and services to 77 children in the programs.

The job cut represents 14 percent of Head Start workforce. The fall enrollment will require a 14 percent drop of currently funded children throughout the eight-county service area.  Staff and families who will be affected by the cuts were notified last week.
