Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte is contemplating an expansion of the jail to house a steady stream of Ralls County prisoners and to be prepared for the future.
Korte recently spoke with the county commissioners about his plan that would more than double the size of the jail, adding 64 beds to the facility that currently has 50.
“Our daily numbers are at or above capacity often,” the Sheriff said.
The Pike County jail is almost at or above 40 inmates on any given day, Korte said. But the number goes over 50 at times, particularly when inmates serving weekend terms arrive. When this occurs, it causes some inmates to sleep on cots inside the jail’s three cells.
“Nothing’s set,” Korte said last week. “We’re looking at the possibilities.”
