Bowling Green FFA member and BGHS senior Ashlee Waddell has shown she has what it takes to excel in the agricultural program.

During the state FFA convention last month, Waddell received two scholarships and a prestigious award for her efforts in swine production.

Waddell, a Curryville resident, received the Missouri Youth in Agriculture Scholarship from Youth in Agriculture Committee members during the 86th Missouri FFA Convention, April 24 and 25, in Columbia.

In addition, Waddell also won the Missouri FFA Swine Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award at the state convention.

Waddell’s supervised agricultural experience program involves breeding her Chester White show pigs. Her home breeding program is targeted to produce top quality show pigs. To be successful in her breeding program she had to learn about animal genetics and how to artificially inseminate (AI) her gilt/sows. Waddell learned that hand feeding her pigs produced a better outcome in raising quality show pigs.  She recently included breeding Berkshire hogs. Waddell hardest decisions come in the spring when she has to decide which pigs will be used for show, breeding or slaughter.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Swine Production Entrepreneurship is one of 50 proficiency award areas recognized at state level. Missouri Pork Association sponsors the award.

Waddell also received a $1,000 Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) scholarship, which she plans to use to pursue a degree at the University of Missouri.

Recipients of the ADM scholarship are selected from 6,315 applicants from across the country. Selections were based on the applicant’s leadership, academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural or work experience in agricultural education and future goals.

Waddell is the daughter of David and Angie Waddell. Her FFA advisors are Brock Bailey, Jason Davis, and Matt Graves.

After graduation, Waddell plans on attending the University of Missouri Columbia for science and agricultural journalism.
