“What are your thoughts on gun control?”
We asked, and you posted. Last week, the Bowling Green Times asked its Facebook followers what they think about the government’s discussions and debates regarding gun control. Here are your answers.
Question: “A gun control bill has hit the Senate floor for discussion and voting. What are your thoughts on gun control? Should the government instate the background checks? What about a ban on ‘assault weapons’?”
Your Answers: “Yes to background checks, need extensive mental health checks as well. As an American it is my right to bear arms. The government should NOT be able to decide what type of firearm I can own. It is my opinion that the government is infringing on too many of my rights now. I don’t think the government is “ for the people” any longer.” – Karen Funk
“We own rifles, I have a conservation heritage card and I think there should be background checks. If you can’t pass one you don’t need to own a gun.” – Diana Curry Schneider
“I have no problem with back ground checks, But guns don’t shoot by themselves. I feel every individual should have the right of self protection. Personally I do not own a assault weapon but if I wanted one it should be my God given right. But more importantly who are they to say I don’t have the right, they are My government not my maker!” – Scott Odie Thornton
“If guns kill people then cars must drive drunk” – Hilary Gordy
“An assault weapons ban will not fix the problem. Criminals will still be able to get their hands on weapons, any firearm in the hands of the wrong person is a bad thing, single shot or multiple rounds. More people were killed by hammers than firearms last year, are they going to ban hammers.” – Bill Funk
“Yes to background checks, and Yes to an assault rifle ban. No one needs an assault rifle any more than they need a howitzer or a grenade. They aren’t hunting or sporting guns. They are made for one thing – to assault other human beings at a rapid rate. And while we’ll never eliminate gun deaths with a ban, even a small reduction in killings makes it worth doing.” – Dave Caldwell
“Theres no such thing as a assult rifle same calibur as other rifles and semi automatic just looks scary thats all and as far as the better back ground checks nobody is talking about the fact your doctor can report if you are taking anti depressant drugs and such theres always hidden stuff in all these bills remember obama care its the goverment give them a inch they will take a mile or more ciminals dont care what kind of laws are passed they are criminals” – Rick Newingham
