On Saturday, Aug. 9 the Wind Ridge and River Hills farmers’ markets will combine to hold their annual Youth Day event.
4-H and FFA youngsters From Lincoln, Pike, Montgomery, Warren, and surrounding counties are invited to set up at the market at no charge.
There they can sell their poultry, small stock, produce, and any surplus items from their projects, such as cages and supplies.
The market is in the Silex City Park and hours are 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The group has a long history of working with young people including the Spring Poultry Seminar co-sponsored with Central Elevator. The Reserve Grand Champion pen of market birds at the Montgomery County Fair this year was hatched by a regular participant at both of these markets.
On Sept. 13 the groups will hold their annual Fall Poultry Fest, with this year’s emphasis on improving egg quality.
It, too, will be held in Silex and has long been known as one of the better markets in the state for acquiring started pullets and rare and heirloom seedstock.
Two weeks later, on Sept. 27, the season for the Wind Ridge Market will be re-launched with a special Autumn Market on Main Street in Eolia.
Oct. 23 through 25, the group will again be participating in the National Small Farm Show. The group will provide numerous speakers and moderators for the seminars and panels. Topics already slated are methods for applying for grant funding, laying flock management, and small beef herd care.
